This Ethiopian Chickpea Stew Will Warm Your Soul | SOUP SEASON

Shiro Wat is an amazing Ethiopian comfort food that is super easy to make! It’s the easiest chickpea soup recipe ever. We’ll learn to make Niter Kibbeh (spiced clarified butter) and injera (sour flatbread), what Berbere spice is, and how to recreate this soup when we can’t find the ingredients indigenous to Ethiopia. Enjoy this recipe interpretation with us!

When you made the butter I knew you are not playn lol you are making it like a true Ethiopian. You know how much we Ethiopians love our butter. I've seen a lot of cooks mess up our traditional dishes but you get a pass man.

Pre-Colonial Christianity? Ethopia became Christian 17 years after Rome did. More accurate to say Pre-Dark age.

Been in a restaurant and they served that Ethiopian bread (I think) and it was literally sour. And I am confused, cause German sourdough bread (which I know well) is not actually sour, so… How are those two very different things similar?

I was salivating throughout the video. I know what flavor profile you were referring to and also love stews/ dishes made with chickpea flour/ besan. Gatta da saag is one of my favorite stews and sattu is my favorite drink.

If you want to try making something really crazy, try Norwegian smalahåve or lutefisk.

Tbh I suggest every non-Ethiopian to get Berbere, your version is quite good, but there are spices that you didn’t use and that are just not available outside Ethiopia, it is available in the internet obviously but in larger towns there are often Ethiopian shops, oftentimes I’ve also seen Ethiopian seamstresses that also sell a small amount of Ethiopian foods for the diaspora such as Teff flour, injera bread and spices such as Berbere, Ethiopian Cardamom and the other plants you mentioned.

It's 2 am and I'm just finished cooking my first Shiro Wat. I do not know how close I'm to the original, I'm kidding a couple of spices. But it is flavourful and I keep testing it bit by bit. It's is really good to my taste. I'm also a bit drunk because it took me 2 hours to cook and I happened to have a bottle of wine at arm's reach.

Andong, and The Team, you should have a meetup in Berlin this summer. And you should make everyone bring some food by your recipe to get admitted (nah, it should be a soft restriction).

Substitute water with coconut milk, it will make it more creamy and add another dimension

Best substitute for the flatbread is fermented Indian Dhosa/Thosai…African & Indian cuisine have a lot in common

i have an ethiopean housemate, and she always keeps this big jar of solidified grease in the fridge. I always wondered what it was, but watching this made me realise that it's niter kibbeh

I think it makes the taste so much better if you let the chickpea powder for a few hours in the water before you put it to the hot pan.The taste of the chickpea powder becomes milder and the taste of the spices shine much more. My family does not really like the taste of chickpeas but with this trick they like this soup much more.

Simply loved the soup series, you managed to make me try some incredible recipes. I've already added many of them to my repertoire, thanks for making me grow as a chef!

Made all of it, it is so awesome!

Elshadie Solomon August 17, 2022 - 2:31 am

quick note; we don't actually add cinnamon to our berbere mix, but I get that you are trying to get as close to the original as possible

I live in Chicago and can walk down the street and buy injera from an ethiopian joint. I often forget just how privileged I am to live in such a multi-ethnic society. I can actually just order shiro wat along with it xD but this is fascinating so I may give a go at trying to replicate this at home.

Larry Chüper November 29, 2022 - 2:33 pm

Nice! I've found that discarded sourdough starter can be made into a fairly convincing injera.

Hayhayokayy December 9, 2022 - 3:48 pm

Why'd you even make the dish if you didn't source the actual ingredients? You're a youtuber in first world country. You easily could've sourced the actual ingredients.

Steven Jacobs January 3, 2023 - 6:52 pm

Thank you for making this. I've been curious about making ethiopian cuisine for a long time, and this video brought me over the edge. Have my Shiro wat boiling right now. Your videos are great!

Shara Kirkby January 12, 2023 - 12:20 pm
